Artistic Director George Skibine originally choreographed "Sarabande" for the Paris Opera Ballet to celebrate the 1961 visit of President Kennedy to Versailles. (Skibine was the Artistic Director of the Paris Opera Ballet at the time.) He reworked "Sarabande" for the Harkness Ballet in 1965. It served as a showcase for the exceptional male dancers of the company.
